I just signed a British Heart Foundation petition to make sure that emergency life support skills are taught to all children at school.

The more people that sign, the more chance there is that all children leave school having learnt simple, but vital life saving skills. It only takes a minute to sign the petition here.

I like this poem.

The “definitive version,” as published by The Times and The Sunday Times in Frye’s obituary, 5 November 2004:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Mary Frye, who was living in Baltimore at the time, wrote the poem in 1932. She had never written any poetry, but the plight of a young German Jewish woman, Margaret Schwarzkopf, who was staying with her and her husband, inspired the poem. She wrote it down on a brown paper shopping bag. Margaret Schwarzkopf had been concerned about her mother, who was ill in Germany, but she had been warned not to return home because of increasing anti-Semitic unrest. When her mother died, the heartbroken young woman told Frye that she never had the chance to “stand by my mother’s grave and shed a tear”. Frye found herself composing a piece of verse on a brown paper shopping bag. Later she said that the words “just came to her” and expressed what she felt about life and death.[1] Mary Frye circulated the poem privately. Because she never published or copyrighted it, there is no definitive version. She wrote other poems, but this, her first, endured. Her obituary in The Times made it clear that she was the author of the famous poem, which has been recited at funerals and on other appropriate occasions around the world for seventy years.

This Sunday, Ultimate Cage Championships will present their second ‘Contenders’ event at Edgeley Park, Stockport. Currently, two Professional fights top the bill, which see the respective returns of Billy Glossop and Lloyd Harrop, who both will be partaking in their first contests since November.

This win takes ‘Our Kid’ to 3-2 as a Professional, while Winder, the trainer at Te Sheng Do, Newton Heath, drops to 0-2 after his first fight since 2007.

Chris Phythian started well against Te Sheng Do’s Luke Ryder, implementing some good strikes and landing a successful takedown. However, the taller Ryder swept Phythian, ending up in mount. Despite a spirited effort from Hyde MMA’s Phythian to stay in the bout and Ryder looking more tired as the session went on, the fight was eventually stopped after 3:30, giving Ryder a debut victory, and dropping Chris to 0-2 at Semi Pro.

Rammstein return to the M.E.N Arena next spring as part of their highly anticipated greatest hits tour Made In Germany 1995 – 2011.
Tickets for the Thursday 1 March concert go on sale at 9am Friday 8 July, priced £42.50.
The German industrial rockers return to the Arena with a brand new production for 2012 following last year’s Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da (Love Is There For All Of Us) UK tour.
Formed in Berlin in 1994, the band – Till Lindemann, Richard Z. Kruspe, Paul Landers, Flake Lorenz, Christopher Schneider and Oliver Riedel – scored a massive debut hit when their first album, Herzeleid, sold over half a million copies.
Since then Rammstein, part of Germany’s Neue Deutsche Harte scene, have released a further five albums with tracks from 1997′s Sehnsucht appearing in David Lynch’s film Lost Highway.

End the menace of potholes

Potholes cause millions of pounds of damage to cars every year. Join our call for a new road sign to warn of the dangers.

The government must take urgent action to ensure drivers are warned when their vehicles are at risk of damage from potholes. That is the aim of a new Confused.com campaign.

We have set up a petition calling for the national adoption of a new “potholes ahead” road sign, which will indicate to motorists that they are about to encounter a heavily damaged road surface.

A survey suggests that pothole damage costs UK drivers as much as £400 each a year, with the overwhelming majority – 90 per cent – of road users saying they do not feel adequately alerted to upcoming potholes.
